How does Indian Head Massage work?
Every Ayurvedic massage is unique. This is because the therapist first analyzes the patient and then selects a suitable combination of oils and massage techniques based on his or her diagnosis. Herbal oils such as sesame oil, mustard oil, almond oil, coconut oil or olive oil are widely used It is believed that three of the major energy centres of the human body can be found in and around the head, these are the brow, the crown and the throat chakra. Acting on a physical, mental and subtle level, Indian head massage stimulates these important energy centres, so helping to maintain the important balance of energy within the body, which in turn promotes a sense of well being, positive energy and relaxation. Precautions
Ayurvedic head massage relies on liberal application of 100% natural herbal oils to aid the massage process. It is a good idea to find out whether your body has any adverse reaction to the oil by applying a small amount of oil to your forearm.
It is also a good idea not to wear your best clothes as some oil might find its' way onto the clothes, your massage therapist will not be help responsible for any damage or spills caused to any clothing.
Due to the deep state of relaxation that it induces, it is also a good idea not to schedule any important business immediately after the massage. Always make sure that you avoid alcohol for at least five hours before the treatment. People with acne prone skin may choose to avoid using oil during the massage process.
When not to have Indian Head Massage.
Indian Head Massage should be avoided if you have had recent surgery, or a head or neck injury; a history of thrombosis or embolism; spondylitis (inflammation of the vertebra) or spondylosis. (degenerative osteoarthritis of the joints between the centra of the spinal vertebrae) If you have very high or low blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy, any kind of heart condition, cancer or osteoporosis, or are in the first three months of pregnancy talk to your doctor before arranging a treatment. You will probably still be able to proceed but you must get their permission first.
Tips & advice
Wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting a little oil on, only the shoulders upwards are treated and it is performed through the clothes. (see option 1) Oils will be used on the head and neck. It is advised to leave the oil in the hair for at least eight hours before washing out to fully benefit. I like to leave mine in overnight using a towel on my pillow for protection. At least four sessions of treatment gives the most benefit. Oil is applied to the scalp using gentle massage with wavy and circular motions. The temples, ears, forehead, eyebrows and neck are then massaged thoroughly and this is repeated several times. Also the shoulder and neck areas are massaged and acupressure is applied to the Marma Points.
